Belgian embassies and consulates abroad

Belgium is represented abroad by over 100 Embassies and Consulates-General. The Embassies are located in the capitals of the countries in which they exercise their jurisdiction. This jurisdiction sometimes extends to neighbouring countries which do not have a Belgian embassy.

In addition to their diplomatic tasks, our Embassies and Consulates also act as public services, in certain areas, for Belgians abroad as for foreigners (registry, legalisation, notarial services, assistance to Belgians abroad, visa issuance for non-Belgian citizens,…).

Belgium is also represented abroad by several Honorary Consuls whose range of activities is more limited. Honorary Consuls are normally chosen from among the local population, mainly because of the close contacts that they have. They are rarely Belgian nationals and do not always speak our national languages. Most of them have other jobs. Their position as Honorary Consul is exercised on a voluntary basis and they are not paid for their services. In some cases, if necessary, they will refer you to the Embassy or the Belgian Consulate, to whom they are answerable.
